Job Summary:
As a Teaching Assistant in an SEN school, you will play a vital role in supporting students with a variety of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and emotional or behavioural challenges. You will assist the classroom teacher in delivering lessons and providing individualised support to students, helping them achieve their learning goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Student Support:
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with SEN to ensure they can engage with learning activities.
- Assist students in their personal care needs where applicable, including hygiene, mobility, and feeding.
- Support students in developing social skills, emotional well-being, and independent learning.
- Classroom Assistance:
- Work closely with the classroom teacher to implement lesson plans and learning activities tailored to the needs of SEN students.
- Help prepare learning materials and adapt resources to accommodate individual student needs.
- Manage classroom behaviour in line with the school’s behaviour policy, ensuring a calm and supportive learning environment.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Liaise with teachers, SEN coordinators, and external therapists to ensure the holistic support of students.
- Provide feedback on student progress, including any concerns or changes in behaviour, to the classroom teacher and parents.
- Attend meetings with parents, teachers, and SEN specialists when required.
- Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and development.
- Assist in the supervision of students during breaks, lunchtime, or extracurricular activities.
- Help organise and manage classroom resources to ensure they are accessible and effective for SEN students.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Education and Experience:
- A minimum of a Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent is preferred.
- Previous experience working with children with special educational needs (SEN) is highly desirable.
- Skills and Competencies:
- Empathy and patience in working with students who have a wide range of needs.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with students, teachers, and parents.
- Ability to use initiative and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Understanding of SEN educational strategies, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD).
- Additional Requirements:
- An enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required, or willingness to obtain one supply teachers
- Ability to build rapport with students and support their individual learning journeys.
